“Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed.”
- Shinichi Suzuki
At the Poole Society for Young Musicians, we welcome children of all ages to discover the joy of learning an instrument and making music together.
Whether your child is just starting out or already playing, our supportive teachers and group programmes help them grow as musicians - and as part of a musical community.
From first notes to full ensembles, every young musician has a place here.
PSYM was established in 2011, originally gaining recognition through the Broadstone Music series, which continues to this day. As it became clear that music education was in decline, the focus of the organisation gently but purposefully shifted toward education. With the support of a dedicated committee and a network of professional colleagues, the charity has since grown into a vibrant and supportive musical community. We provide high quality professional concerts alongside a positive and nurturing youth music education programme.
At the heart of PSYM is a Music Academy, where young people come together not only for instrumental lessons but also to experience the joy of making music as part of ensembles at every level of learning. Students can take part in the Junior Orchestra and Brass ensembles, and as they develop, progress into Symphonic Winds and Camerata Strings who combine for a fabulous orchestra who perform sometimes at the Lighthouse. The strings programme has a particular focus on chamber music, nurturing confidence, independence and close musical collaboration, while also creating special opportunities to work alongside outstanding professional musicians.
Through partnerships with leading conservatoires, students are able to take part in inspiring workshops with visiting artists and attend events at some of the country’s most prestigious institutions. Recently, six of our young musicians were selected to attend a masterclass at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with the Head of Chamber Music, as well as hearing a recital within its celebrated chamber music festival, an experience that will stay with them for years to come.
Everything we do is rooted in a commitment to our young people. Any funds raised are reinvested directly into enriching their musical journeys, helping them to flourish and reach the highest standards in a positive, inclusive and encouraging environment. Our annual Summer School, now in its thirteenth year, is always a highlight of the calendar, bringing together energy, creativity and a shared love of music in a truly special way.
The charity was formed and is led by its Music Director, Alison Kay, whose dedication and vision have been central to its success. In recognition of her outstanding services to music in the local community, she was awarded the British Empire Medal last year, an honour that reflects the lasting impact of her work and the opportunities she has created for so many young musicians.
